Almond Day

Almond Day

Today is Almond Day -- and we can only guess why.

Our best guess so far as to why it falls on February 16th is that this is approximately the time when almond trees start to blossom in California. California produces 80% of the almonds sold in the world today. The almond harvest season there gets underway in August.

In the French revolutionary calendar, Almond Day actually was a nationally recognized day. It fell, though, on "Octidi 18 Thermidor" (5th August) each year, marking perhaps the time when the Almond Harvest might be getting underway in France.
