Buttercrunch Lettuce

Buttercrunch Lettuce is a leafy lettuce as opposed to a head lettuce. It has crisp, dark green leaves, and occasionally a tinge of red at the edge of some leaves.

It has a yellowish-white "heart" at the centre, where the leaves haven't been exposed to the sun yet and so are "blanched."

It grows well at any time of the growing season. It will grow through the cooler parts at either end of the season, and is slow to bolt in the heat.

You can treat it as a pick and come again lettuce by harvesting the outer leaves.

Developed by George Raleigh, Cornell University professor of vegetable crops. Released circa 1963 (won the All-America Selection award in that year.)
