Desiccated Coconut is dried, shredded (or flaked) Coconut.

It can be bought sweetened or unsweetened, flaked or shredded, and grated fine, medium or coarse,

It is usually sold in bags.

Cooking Tips for Desiccated Coconut

To toast Desiccated Coconut, spread it out on a baking sheet and toast under broiler or grill just until it starts to brown. It will happen all at once, so don't wander off to answer the phone. A slower but more cautious method is just to use the oven, at 325 F (160 C) for about 10 minutes.

If your Desiccated Coconut has become really desiccated (i.e. brittle and totally dried), you can soak it in water or milk for about 15 minutes. Drain, and dry the coconut on paper towel. You can also use the liquid in your recipe or freeze for another use.

Equivalents for Desiccated Coconut

2 cups of Desiccated Coconut = 5 oz = 140g = 1 grated coconut

1 oz (30 g) Desiccated Coconut = 4 tablespoons
100g / 4 oz Desiccated Coconut = 1 cup

Storage Hints for Desiccated Coconut

Store in sealed container once bag is opened.
